Scarce Duke of Beaufort Badminton (Gloucestershire) copper Conder halfpenny token dated 1796. Obverse: A pair of scales in centre with legend: "THE SALE OF CORN BY WEIGHT PROPOSED 1796". Reverse: A pair of scales with a loaf of bread on the left pan and weights on the right pan WITH LEGEND: "1s. WORTH OF BREAD 1795•96 * GOOD LORD DELIVER US *", with the weight "3½ lb" in centre. Plain edge. Issued by Jelly and Arnot of Bath. According to Dalton & Hamer, "The Badminton series of tokens are not currency tokens, but were struck to perpetuate the memory of the Duke of Beaufort, and to illustrate incidents connected with a period of scarcity of corn, and all are considered rather "SCARCE".
