Scarce Burntisland (Fife) Vitriol Company copper halfpenny token dated 1797. The only halfpenny token issued for Fife. Obverse: Cypher of: "B V & Co" above a carboy with a rose and a thistle on either side. Reverse: Garter round edge: "NEMO ME IMPUNE LACESSIT", which translates as: "no one shall meddle with me with impunity", common to a lot of Scottish coins. In the centre: "BURNT-ISLAND VITRIOL COMPY. 1797" on five lines. Diagonally milled edge. Issued by the Burntisland Vitriol Company whose principal proprietor was a Mr Pitcairn. Listed in Bell's "Commercial Coins 1787-1804" as "SCARCE". Nice collectable condition with slightly uneven colour, see photograph.
