Clachar's Shire Hall Chelmsford Halfpenny 1794

William Clachar’s Chelmsford (Essex) copper Conder halfpenny token dated 1794. Obverse: Front view of the County Hall, a magnificent Georgian building: “SHIRE HALL”. Reverse: Crown over sword and sceptre with radiating rays behind: “KING AND CONSTITUTION 1794”. Edge inscription: “PAYABLE AT CLACHAR & CO’S CHELMSFORD ESSEX”. The issuer of the token is likely to have been William Clachar, a freeholder of Chelmsford, who had a business as a bookseller, printer, bookbinder, distributor of stamps, agent to the Sun Fire Office, appraiser and auctioneer, a man of many talents. Good collectable condition, discoloured, peeling lacquer removed with acetone leaving uneven tone, see photograph.
