Rare Kempson's South Shields (County Durham) Kempson's copper Conder halfpenny token undated. Obverse: Standing figure of Faith holding a book with legend: "SOUTH SHIELDS HALFPENNY 1794." Reverse: A three-masted coaling barque with legend: "SUCCESS TO THE COAL TRADE". Edge inscription: "PAYABLE AT SOUTH SHIELDS AND LONDON". These usually appear with a die flaw across to the date and are listed in Bell's "Commercial Coins. 1787-1804" as "RARE" without it. Good collectable condition, discoloured, peeling lacquer removed with acetone leaving highly reflective surfaces not picked up in photograph. D&H Durham No: 4. Diameter 29.4mm.
