Shepheard’s Plymouth (Devonshire) copper Conder halfpenny token dated 1796. Obverse: A woman seated on a stool spinning at a wheel with legend: “SAIL CANVAS MANUFACTORY 1796”. Reverse: A weaver sitting working at a loom with legend: “PLYMOUTH HALFPENNY”. Edge inscription: “PAYABLE AT SHEPHEARD DOVE HAMMETT & CO .XX.”. Listed in Bell’s “Commercial coins 1787-1804” as becoming SCARCE, only approximately 15,000 struck. Shepheard, Dove Hammett & Co’s hemp and flax manufactory was founded by eight men as a philanthropic venture to give employment to the poor and to provide for the education and clothing of indigent children.
