Scarce Andrew Nicol’s Montrose copper Conder halfpenny token dated 1799. Obverse: Arms of the Duke of Montrose: “MONTROSE HALFPENNY 1799”. The crest is a falcon preying on a heron lying on it’s back, with a stork supporter either side. Reverse: View of the Lunatic Asylum: “MONTROSE LUNATIC HOSPITAL, ERECTED BY SUBSCRIPTION 1781”. Edge inscription: “PAYABLE BY ANDREW NICOL TOBACONIST X”. Listed in Dalton & Hamer as “SCARCE”. Andrew Nicol was a tobacconist with a shop in the High Street of Montrose. Reasonable collectable condition for type with the usual edge cuds resulting from damaged dies, see photograph.
