John Steele's Forfar Castle & Town Halfpenny Token 1797


John Steele's Forfar (Angusshire) copper halfpenny token dated 1797. The only halfpenny token issuer for Forfar. Obverse: Three turreted castle flying large flag with legend: "PAYABLE ON DE=MAND BY JOHN STEELE", "WRIGHT DES". Reverse: Distant view of Forfar from the river with legend: "HALFPENNY FORFAR 1797". Edge inscription: "+.+.+.+.+.+.+.+.+.". John Steele was a linen and woollen draper with a business in the High Street, Forfar. Nice collectable condition with obverse die flaw beginning to develop, see photograph.
