John Pilmer's Glassworks Dundee Bronzed Halfpenny 1797

John Pilmer's Dundee (Angus) bronzed copper halfpenny token dated 1797. Obverse: Town House with legend: "DUNDEE HALFPENNY 1797 TOWN HOUSE FINISHED 1734". Reverse: Detailed view of a glassworks with legend: "GLASS WORKS WEST CONE FOUNDED 1788 WRIGHT DES". Edge legend, "PAYABLE BY JOHN PILMER CHURCH LANE X X". John Pilmer was a grocer with a business on Church Lane, just off the High Street, Dundee. The old glassworks were at Carolina Port, Dundee but did not prosper and were abandoned early in the nineteenth century. Nice collectable condition for type with reflective surfaces and no trace of the usual die cuds indicating an extremely early strike from polished dies before the subsequent damage to them, see photograph.
