John Powell's brass calendar medal for the year 1779. John Powell was the only maker to straddle both the Julian and Gregorian calendars, striking single year calendar medals in an uninterrupted series from 1746 to 1782. Powell was a button-maker with his business at Powell's Yard, 34 Spiceall Street, Birmingham. The British Museum does not have an example for this year, ref: Ackerman, "Calendar Medals in the British Museum", The Medal, Autumn 2004.
