Rare Anglo-Canadian Spread Eagle (Not Local) copper halfpenny token dated 1813. Obverse: Britannia, holding laurel branch, within oak wreath. Reverse: An eagle with wings spread, holding in its talons four arrows and an olive branch: “HALFPENNY TOKEN 1813”. Centre-grained edge (/////). Listed in Paul & Bente Withers’ “British Copper Tokens 1811-1820” as “R – RARE”. Overstruck on a Bristol halfpenny, these are thought to have been imported by a Boston Merchant who settled in Montreal and may have circulated in Britain first.
