British Copper Company Walthamstow (Essex) copper penny token dated 1812. Obverse: Text on three lines within oak wreath and round periphery: “BRITISH COPPER COMPANY SMELTING WORKS AT LANDORE*”. Reverse: Lion walking to the left: “ROLLING MILLS AT WALTHAMSTOW ONE PENNY 1812. Centre-grained edge. Issued by The British Copper Company which had smelting works at Landore, Wales, and rolling mills at Walthamstow, Middlesex. The buildings of the Walthamstow Rolling Mills are still standing and I’m indebted to Michael Wood for the recent photographs below. Good collectable condition with less obvious partial weak strike as usual for type, cleaned in the past and now toning out, see photograph.
