Scottish Mary Queen of Scots (1542-1567), bawbee (six pence), first period (1542-58). Obverse: "MARIA D. G. R. SCOTORVM", (Mary by the grace of God Queen of Scots). This is a later variety as "REGINA" has been reduced to "R" in the legend. Reverse: Crown on a voided saltire cross: "OPPIDVM EDINBVRGI" with retrograde "N", "Town of Edinburgh". The voided cross type is the less common variety from the Edinburgh Mint. The cinquefoils on the reverse refer to the Earl of Arran who was acting as Regent while Mary was still under age.
