Prince James Treaty of Ryswick Dove Medallion 1697

SOLD

Fortunes of Prince James (the Old Pretender) copper medallion dated 1697. These were produced by James II of England (and VII of Scotland) for distribution to the delegates form the countries signing the Peace Treaty at Ryswick in the Netherlands in September 1697. They were to remind those present that the rightful heir to the British crown was James II's son James, Prince of Wales who was featured on the medallion, rather than William III with whom they were negotiating. The effort proved fruitless and the peace was signed recognising William III's claim to the throne. This medallion featured a bust of the young Prince James on the obverse and a flying dove with an olive branch in it's beak on the reverse. The Latin legend reads: "MANSVRAE NVNTIA PACIS" which translates as: "THE HARBINGER OF PERMANENT PEACE". Nice collectable condition, see photograph. I am indebted to my friend Iain Fleming for help with background information on this series.
