Merchant Traders Barnstaple Silver Shilling 1811

Local traders Barnstaple (Devon) silver shilling token dated 1811. Obverse: Prince of Wales feathers in centre with legend: “DEVONSHIRE SILVER TOKEN FOR XII PENCE * FOR CONVENIENCE OF CHANGE”. Reverse: Legend on six lines in centre and around periphery: “ISSUED AT BARNSTAPLE 14 NOVEMBER 1811 * BY MESSRS JOS. EVANS JOHN BOWHAY MICHL NOTT & R. GRIBBLE”. Diagonally milled edge (//////). The issuers were a mixture of local linen merchants and grocers. Lovely collectable condition, possibly cleaned in the past with some resultant hairlines, see photograph.
