Wilkinson's Iron Master & Vulcan Halfpenny 1792

SOLD

Wilkinson's (Warwickshire) copper Conder halfpenny token dated 1792. Obverse: Bust of John Wilkinson with legend: “IOHN WILKINSON IRON MASTER.”. Reverse: Vulcan seated hammering on anvil behind which is a ship with legend: “HALFPENNY 1792”. Edge inscription: “WILLEY SNEDSHILL BERSHAM BRADLEY”. This is the variety with small letters in the obverse legend. The Wilkinson Series was wrongly attributed by Dalton & Hamer to Warwickshire and should have been included in the Shropshire section. John Wilkinson was one of the leading iron masters at the end of the eighteenth century and, more importantly for collectors of Conder tokens, the second person to commence their issue. Lovely collectable condition, see photograph.
