Beccles Church & Bridge Halfpenny 1795

SOLD

Beccles (Suffolk) copper Conder halfpenny token dated 1795. Obverse: A detailed view of the ornate south porch of the parish church with legend: “B’ECCLESLÆ”. Reverse: The old hump-backed bridge spanning the River Waveny, complete with lights and statues in the niches with legend: “COMMUNITATE ACTUA 1795 F S U”. Edge inscription: “PAYABLE AT BECCLES SUFFOLK”. The issuer is unknown, as is the meaning of “FSU” on the reverse. The fine detail on this token can only really be appreciated through an eye-glass. These were stuck in high relief and were worn down very quickly losing most of the design, however this specimen is in lovely condition for the type with a little original colour remaining, see photograph.
