Scarce Bath Remembers Debtors John Howard Halfpenny

Scarce Bath (Somersetshire) copper Conder halfpenny token undated. Obverse: Bust of John Howard to left with legend: "IOHN HOWARD F. R. S. HALFPENNY.". Reverse: A female seated amongst riches instructing a young boy with a key to unlock the prison doors with legend: "GO FORTH", "REMEMBER THE DEBTORS IN GOAL *". Edge inscription: "CURRANT EVERY WHERE". Listed in Dalton & Hamer as: "SCARCE". John Howard's life work was the study of prisons, which culminated in his book: "The State of the Prisons in England and Wales", published in 1777. Lovely collectable condition with rich tone, see photograph.
