Mary Lambe's Bath (Somerset) copper Conder penny token dated 1794. Obverse: Walking figure of camel carrying heavy load on its back, beneath a radiating sky: "TEAS COFFEE SPICES & SUGAR.". Reverse: View of the ornate Georgian London Old East India House Tea Exchange building: "INDIA HOUSE", "M. LAMBE & SON TEA-DEALERS & GROCERS BATH * 1794". Edge inscription: "WE PROMISE TO PAY ONE PENNY ON DEMAND". Mary Lamb & Son were grocers and tea dealers of Stall Street in Bath. The camel beneath the rays of the eastern sun probably refers to the spices sold; it is also the crest of the Grocers Company. Ex-Neil Beaton Collection.
