Scarce Robert Orchard's London (Middlesex) copper Conder farthing dated 1803. Obverse: Legend on eight lines: “ROBERT ORCHARD GROCER & TEA DEALER No 34 GREEK ST. SOHO LONDON WHOLESALE & RETAIL 1803”. Reverse: Standing figure of Chinese man amongst bales with sailing ship in distance: “MAKER OF CHOCOLATE & COCOA ON A NEW PRINCIPLE FARTHING”. Plain edge. Robert Orchard was a grocer and tea-dealer with a business at 34 Soho Street, London. He also manufactured chocolate and cocoa at Sawbridgeworth. Listed in Bell’s “Tradesmen’s Tickets and Private Tokens” as “SCARCE”. Good collectable condition with small scratch on obverse, see photograph.
