Skidmore's St. Paul's Church Ruins Halfpenny 1795

SOLD

Skidmore's St. Paul's Church, London (Middlesex) copper Conder halfpenny token dated 1795. Obverse: Lovely view of St. Paul's Church: “ST. PAULS COVENT GARDEN LONDON”. Reverse: View of the same building after it had been ruined by fire: “DESTROY'D, BY, FIRE, SEPR, 17th. 1795”. Diagonally milled edge. Although Dalton & Hamer attributed this token to Skidmore, Bell regards it as one of Spence's, the dies having been cut for him in 1795 by James, his usual diesinker. Intriguing token in nice collectable condition with a little original colour remaining, see photograph.
