Scarce Skidmore’s London (Middlesex ) copper Conder halfpenny token dated 1796. Obverse: View of a shackled man with a padlock in his mouth and legend: “A * FREE * BORN * BRITON * OF * 1796”. Reverse: Knife and fork padlocked to a plate with legend: “USELESS”. Plain edge. The obverse may refer to the “Gagging Act”. Listed in Dalton & Hamer as “SCARCE”. Ex-Neil Beaton Collection. Nice collectable condition, possibly cleaned in the past an now toning out, see photograph.
