Pidcock’s Zoological Exhibition London (Middlesex) copper Conder halfpenny token dated 1801. Obverse: A lion cradling a small dog with legend: "*PIDCOCKS* GRAND . MENAGERIE . EXETER . CHANGE . LONDON". Reverse: A cockatoo with legend: "ORANGE CRESTED COCKATOO 1801". Plain edge. J. Pidcock was the proprietor of the Exeter 'Change Menagerie and importer of foreign animals. The business later passed to Gilbert Pidcock, and the tickets issued by both men were trade tickets advertising the menagerie and passed for small change in circulation. The lion should really be a lioness. Pidcock's lioness lost her cub and was given a puppy to rear and suckle in place of her own offspring. Interesting token in lovely collectable condition, see photograph.
