Rare Franklin's Press London (Middlesex) copper Conder halfpenny token dated 1794. Obverse: Printing Press with legend: “SIC ORITUR DOCTRINA SURGETQUE LIBERTAS * 1794” (Thus by the Printing Press a philosophy originates and Liberty will burst forth). Reverse: Legend on five lines: “PAYABLE AT THE FRANKLIN PRESS LONDON”. Plain edge. Listed in Bell's “Specious Tokens and those struck for General Circulation” as “RARE”. Benjamin Franklin worked as a printer in London however this was issued long afterwards, possibly by sympathisers with the American cause. Good collectable condition for type, see photograph.
