Wainfleet Abbey and Hope Halfpenny 1793

Wainfleet (Lincolnshire) copper Conder halfpenny token dated 1793. Obverse: View of Wainfleet Abbey: “FOUNDED BY WILLIAM WAYNEFLETE 1459”. Reverse: A figure of Hope standing holding an anchor, with a sailing ship in the background: “WAINFLEET HALFPENNY 1793”. Edge inscription: “PAYABLE AT THE WAREHOUSES OF D. WRIGHT & S. PALMER . X.”. The “Abbey” pictured was in fact Magdalene College which was founded by William Wayneflete who was also the founder of the college of the same name in Oxford. It closed as a school in the 1970s and is now a museum. Lovely collectable condition, see photograph.
