Worswick's John of Gaunt Lancaster Halfpenny 1792

Worswick’s Lancaster (Lancashire) copper Conder halfpenny token dated 1792. Obverse: Bust of John of Gaunt, star under bust, no period after legend: “IOHN OF GAUNT DUKE OF LANCASTER”. Reverse: Shield with no period at end of legend: “LANCASTER HALFPENNY 1792”. Edge inscription: “PAYABLE AT THE WAREHOUSE OF THOS WORSWICK & SONS .X.”. Worswick and Sons appear to have been gold and silver smiths, watchmakers and jewellers in New Street, Lancaster, as well as being bankers. John of Gaunt, the fourth son of Edward III, was born at Ghent (Gaunt) around 1340 and was later made the Duke of Lancaster. His son by his first wife, Blanche, later became Henry V.
