Rare Myns Goudhurst M Countermark Kentish Horse Halfpenny 1794

Rare Myn's Goudhurst (Kent) copper Conder halfpenny token dated 1794. Obverse: Kentish horse prancing to the left with legend: “KENT HALFPENNY TOKEN 1794” with “M” countermark. Reverse: Shield of arms of the City of Canterbury with legend: “FOR GENERAL CONVENIENCE”. Edge inscription: “PAYABLE BY W. MYNS GOUDHURST + + + +”. The “M” countermark helped distinguish it from the similar Fuggles issue. Listed in Dalton & Hamer and Bell as: “R - RARE”. William Myns was a freeholder and general shopkeeper with a business in Goudhurst. Reasonable collectable condition for type with the usual flaw at the date, see photograph.

D&H Kent No: 29. Diameter 29.3mm. F+. £40.00
