Jackson's Bishop's Stortford Barges & Canal Halfpenny 1795

SOLD

Jackson's Bishop’s Stortford (Hertfordshire) copper Conder halfpenny token 1795. Obverse: The Coat of Arms of Sir George Jackson with a sheldrake crest: "SIR GEORGE JACKSON BAR : SOLE PROPRIETOR.". Reverse: Lovely landscape view of the river Stort with a horse on the far bank towing a barge: "STORT NAVIGATION SOURCE OF TRADE 1795". Edge inscription: "PAYABLE AT BISHOPS STORTFORD". Sir George Jackson, the sole proprietor of Stort Navigation, was Judge Advocate of the Fleet and also sat as a Member of Parliament. He was a friend of Captain Cook, who named "Port Jackson" in New Zealand, and "Port Jackson" in New South Wales after him. R. C. Bell, in his book "Commercial Coins. 1787 – 1804" says of this design "an exceedingly fine token, the perspective view of the Stort is remarkably well rendered, an effect difficult to achieve on a coin and requiring considerable skill". Lovely collectable condition with bronzed finish, see photograph.
