Scarce Thomas Ayrton's Cowes - Isle of Wight Halfpenny 1798

Scarce Thomas Ayrton's West Cowes, Isle of Wight (Hampshire) copper Conder halfpenny token dated 1798. Obverse: A draped Bust of C. J. Fox: "WEST COWES HALFPENNY 1798". Reverse: Three dolphins, the Arms of the town of West Cowes. Edge inscription: "PAYABLE AT THOS. AYRTON & VO. X". Thomas Ayrton was a linen draper with a business in West Cowes. Listed in Bell's "Commercial Coins 1787 1804" as "SCARCE" in good condition, as only approximately 5,000 were struck. Reasonable collectable condition with some flan flaws and edge knocks, see photograph.
