Jordan's Sir Bevois & Sailing Ship Gosport Halfpenny 1794

John Jordan’s Gosport (Hampshire) copper Conder halfpenny token dated 1794. Obverse: Helmeted profile of Sir Bevois facing left: “PROMISSORY HALFPENNY.”. Reverse: Lovely view of three masted collier ship in full sail to right with date “1794” in exergue, the mainmast to centre of “O”: “PRO BONO PUBLICO”. Edge inscription: “PAYABLE AT I. IORDANS DRAPERS GOSPORT X X”. The issuer, John Jordan, was a mercer and draper with premises in Gosport. It is worth noting that colliers are only shown on three tokens, those of South Shields and Stockton, coal towns in the North of England, and Gosport, a foundry and shipbuilding centre where coal was in constant demand. Nice collectable condition, see photograph.
