Rare Kempson's South Shields Coal Trade Halfpenny 1794


Rare Kempson's South Shields (County Durham) Kempson's copper Conder halfpenny token undated. Obverse: Standing figure of Faith holding a book with legend: "SOUTH SHIELDS HALFPENNY 1794." Reverse: A three-masted coaling barque with legend: "SUCCESS TO THE COAL TRADE". Edge inscription: "PAYABLE AT SOUTH SHIELDS AND LONDON". Ex-Gantz Collection, bought Glendining 23/6/41. These usually appear with a die flaw across to the date and are listed in Bell's "Commercial Coins. 1787-1804" as "RARE" without it but beginning to develop in this specimen. Lovely collectable condition with subdued lustre, see photograph.
