Sparrows Leather Sauce Hot Air Balloon London Farthing

Sparrow’s London (Middlesex) farthing token undated. Obverse: Floating balloon with two small figures waving flags from the balloon gondola. Flags have “S” and “G” on them: “SPARROW NAIL MERCHANT * LONDON *”. Reverse: Legend on three lines: “SPARROW'S LEATHER SAUCE”. Plain edge. This was issued by Isaac Earlysman Sparrow who had an ironmongers business in Bishopsgate, London. He was fascinated by balloons and paid 50 shillings to balloonist Charles Green to accompany him on a flight. Although it nearly ended in disaster, he was not deterred and made plans for more flights. Good collectable condition with dark tone, see photograph.
