
Rare Sparrow’s London (Middlesex) farthing token dated 1825. Obverse: Detailed bust wearing large cap and heavy coat: “ISAAC EARLYSMAN * SPARROW * 1825”. Reverse: Floating balloon with two small figures waving flags from the balloon gondola. Flags have “S” and “G” on them: “IRONMONGER BISHOPSGATE * LONDON *”. Diagonally milled edge. Listed in Bell's “Unofficial Farthings, a Supplement” as “RARE”. This was issued by Isaac Earlysman Sparrow who had an ironmongers business in Bishopsgate, London. He was fascinated by balloons and paid 50 shillings to balloonist Charles Green to accompany him on a flight. Although it nearly ended in disaster, he was not deterred and made plans for more flights. Nice collectable condition, see photograph. Bell No: 2860. Diameter 23mm.
